Can I use my Apple TV without PlexConnect running if I switch the DNS back?

$

My plex/plexconnect setup right now is my desktop, which I don't want to leave running 24/7. I also don't want to have to turn on my computer every time I use my Apple TV. Is it ok to run my Apple TV using my router's DNS instead of plexconnect's especially if I never use the trailers App, which is probably the only thing that bothers using the domain names plex connect changes?

Is this ok? Has any developer sniffed the network to see if only trailers uses the domains that plexconnect pretends to be?

Thanks,
Dave.

3D Movies with subtitle issue

$

Hello guys,

Maybe someone can help me here...
I use PlexConnect for a few years now and always worked great!
But recently, I'm having some problems playing movies in 3D with external subtitle.

For example, once I added "Half-SBS" in both files, movie and subtitle.
And when I put play in the movie, the TV puts itself into 3D mode automatically and the subtitle appeared without any issue.

But now I do exactly same steps but when I put play in the movie, the TV doesn't put itself in 3D mode, I need to do that manually in my TV remote. But doing that the subtitle appears with many issues. Only works fine If the TV puts itself into 3D mode automatically.

Please advice, what I am missing?

Here is the filename that I'm currently using:
Final.Destination.5.3D.2011.1080p.BluRay.Half.SBS.DTS.x264-HDMaNiAcS.Half-SBS

Do I need to change any setting in my Apple TV?

Thanks :)

ATV4 after resisting so long, and lack of SPDIF/TosLink Optical output solved!!

Until today I've been happy as Larry using my ATV3 and Plex Connect. I must be one of the few still using Plexify as the conduit for it all, and despite a very occasional hiccup it's been fairly faultless once I got it all set up properly.

I, like many, was appalled at the decision to drop the optical output on the AT4, since my 10 year old AV amp is stil going strong but doesn't have HDMI pass through, so I decided against upgrading the ATV3 since it looked like I couldn't get the 5.1 audio without an optical output! That was until I was at a friends house and he'd had the same problem but overcame it using an Airport Express and directing the audio output from ATV4 (new menu option in the settings) to the AE and using it's TosLink output. So I did some digging and and saw that HDMI Audio splitters (or extractors) will do the job, and there's no loss of the system sounds that happens via Airport Express (or even the old ATV3) so it's a better solution. There's been discussion about these splitters with a couple in particular being singled out as better than others. I ended up buying a cheaper generic unbranded device for about $30. It's a simple throughput HDMI with selectable audio pass through, 2 ch or 5.1 audio extraction and a proper SPDIF output (and RCA). It does require mains power but it works, and unless inputting a 4K signal or wanting 7.1 audio it does not need to be HDMI 1.4 despite what you might read.

Overall it's a neat solution and now I'm happily using the ATV4 with all it's benefits, not least of which is the ability to have the Plex app without the need for any more certificates or messing with manual IP address settings etc.

So I'm out of this section of the forum now, and would like to thank Baa and a few others (you know who you are) for all their work, advice and help over the last couple of years. I'm lucky that my Plex Connect ride was one of the smoother ones thanks to you all.

OpenPlex App freezing when generating a cert.

Hello,

I'm just starting out trying to get plexconnect working on my apple tv3 from an iMac running 10.8 via the openplex installer. Whenever I select the hijack, the openplex app seems to freeze. If I click anywhere in the app, nothing happens, and the only way I can quit the app is through activity monitor.

The console has an entry that says com.plexconnect.bash Exited with code: 1

I tried closing and reopening the openconnect app, but if I try to add the profile on my apple tv I get an error saying "Unable to add profile. An error occurred while adding the profile [-1004]. Check the URL and try again."

Any ideas? Thanks!

OpenPlex/Plexconnect strange issue

Hi guys,

Suddenly last night I could not access my library on ATV. Running OpenPlex on Mac Mini Server.

It picks up my local and remote libraries, on deck and recently added content - but if I go into any of them, I just get the "Accessing Trailers" forever.

How to install plex connect onto normal atv3?

Hi guys, I've had a atv3 for a while and plex for a while and I've only just realised I can have plex on my atv3, but how? Thanks

PlexConnect now requiring username/password. I can't figure out what's up

I just tried using my ATV3 today after about 2 weeks of not using it, and when I select trailers, I'm prompted with a username/password screen that looks like an Apple standard one, but with a weird template (screenshot attached).

I updated to plex 0.9.16.6 a few days ago. Not sure if that's the culprit. The system was working a few weeks ago. I've tried restarting pms and plexconnect (which both run on the same machine, an Ubuntu box), as well as the ATV3, but no luck.

From looking at the PlexConnect log, it is definitely intercepting at least the DNS requests. I've pasted the log below as well.

Has anyone seen this before? I haven't found anything on the web about this.

thanks

Cast to PlexConnect?

Is it possible to cast to PlexConnect from another device such as an Android phone or the Web app in the same way that I can cast to my Roku?

Also, does the web app show live thumbnails of media being played via PlexConnect in the Now Playing status window?

PlexConnect DNS Windows 10 works bizarre (under Win7 okay, same sources and same instructions used)

Hello community,

after a set of PlexConnect, Plex Media Server and AppleTV3 works fine on a Windows 7 pro, domain member.
I have tried to install it with the same sources on a new fresh **Windows 10 pro, domain member **client for "productive use" at home.

  • python 2.7.11 and OpenSSL installed, certs created, PMS installed, all fine on this point.
  • PlexConnect installed, certs copied, first run works fine, also all fine on this point
  • PlexConnect restarted, smaller start message looks fine!

  • now start a DNS request in another commandline window to my own IP address nslookup trailers.apple.com and get on wondows 10 client a wrong answer, in cause the name resolution adds my domain account of the windows 10 client!

  • DNS runs into timeout and AFTER timeout message to my request DNS resolved the IP - but too late for the request.

  • when I try to resolve trailers.apple.com. I get a fast correct answer, but it's not the function what I need.

I'm not sure why it works different on Windows 10. I have also use a 1:1 copy from my PlexConnect folder from Win7 Client on the Win10 client, exact the same problem.

Any ideas??

Installed plex connect - still get Trailers

$

HI,

I think I've installed the plex connect on my mac, fixed the IP address and can get it running in terminal. Where I had some issues was the certificate on the ATV 2 I've got which would get the error 109 while trying to add the apple.trailers.com/trailers.cer. With some searching, I got the certificate installed using my Plex server IP and port, and then when I look at my plex connect terminal window, it says:
00:30:48 WebServer: serving *.cer: /trailers.cer

So it appears to be working? However, when I click on trailers on the ATV, Apple's trailers still show up and there is no plex??
I have 6.2.1 firmware on the ATV. If anyone can tell me where I might be going wrong, that would be great! THanks

Plexconnect and Pillow

Hi, I successfully installed Plexconnect on my Mac and I installed the certificates manually on AppleTV 3. I would now like to install Theme and Pillow manually without using openplex.
Or is there the possibility of using openplex having already installed plexconnect?
Thanks for any response.

Alex onto ATV3

Apologies, i have searched but couldn't find a definitive answer. I have Plex running on my Mac Mini and am trying to get my ATV3 to see it.
I first off tried the way using Terminal, but it constantly said Webserver not alive, shutdown, etc, words to that effect.Changed the DNS settings etc as per instructions but still nothing.

I have now discovered Open Plex but once opening the installer it just sits there for ages, not doing anything. I have also tried this on my MacBook pro, same thing. Both are running OS X 10.11 - El Capitan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Subtitles not working on ATV3

$

I have a number of foreign movies on my HDD.
Subtitles (mainly .srt) play just fine using VLC and Plex on my PC, and I can call them up on my iPhone Plex app. But ATV3 (current update), no go. If memory serves, it USED to work (although it was hit and miss) so why the change?
(tbh, after looking thru a bunch of stuff online, I realise how little jargon I know... transcoding, embedding, forced vs automatic vs whatever else), tx3g, etc., etc., so please forgive me if I'm not using the right words or giving enough info.)
An aside: how do I get Plex to play the English subs of foreign language spoken parts of an English-speaking film? eg. Bottle Shock

A guide to how I got PlexConnect running on OS X Server (10.7)

$
0
0

Finally I got PlexConnect running on my Mac Mini with OS X Server =D
Lion 10.7
(Also confirmed to work on Mountain Lion 10.8 and Mavericks 10.9, I've updated the guide accordingly where there're differences.)

Updated by f00b4r on 16 December 2013 - Added fix for "/" issue and removed automator applet details as launchctl is now supported in code (see "support/osx" sub folder)

Update, june 16 - The latest version of PlexConnect and the updated settings file has made it easier for us. Along with the addition to our site config from ignipotentis (#29) there's no need to edit any of the PlexConnect scripts anymore which makes our future updates much easier =)

Note there is an alternate method here by Xwk88 that uses a virtual interface rather than vhosts here (note the caveats though):

EDIT: The issue about having to start  PlexConnect first using Xwk88's method has been resolved in this post.

I use my own DNS service and I can still use the web server and host other webpages while PlexConnect is running.

So here's how:

1. Download a fresh copy of PlexConnect.

2. Run the PlexConnect.py script once in the terminal to create the settings.cfg file. Then hit CTRL+enter to end the script

3. Edit the settings.cfg file,
set ip_pms to the ip of your PlexMediaServer
set ip_dnsmaster to the ip of your DNS-server (in my case these two are the same)
set enable_dnsserver to "false" (without the quotes)
set port_webserver to "9999" (without the quotes)
[attachment=17564:Skärmavbild 2013-06-16 kl. 20.14.11.png]

4. Now we have to edit the file webserver.py. First we change the port it's working on from 80 (as this conflicts with our own web server). I changed it to port 9999.

5. The second change to webserver.py is made to stop the plexconnect web server from checking if it's really an appletv it's serving or any other device. As we later on will forward and return appletv-requests from our webserver to the plexconnect webserver we don't want evil error 403-messages we want nice XML-files to serve our apple-tv with
Replace the lines I've selected in the picture with if self.headers.startswith(""):
Before:
After:

6. That's it with the plexconnect script. Fire it up and make sure everything works as it's supposed to.
You should get the message "WebServer : WebServer: Serving HTTP on YOUR_IP_ADDRESS port 9999."
If you open safari and enter http://localhost:9999 the result is supposed to be an error 403 page which says your device isn't served by PlexConnect. (We'll deal with that later)

PlexConnect is working as it's supposed to =) Lets move on!

7. Now it's time to fix our DNS-server. As I use Lion server I use Server Admin. DNS is integrated in Server App if you use 10.8. (Setting up DNS in Mavericks Server developer preview - read notes in Nevirs' post #96)

Add a new zone and machine record as the image shows. trailers.apple.com is where the ATV makes its request. 10.0.1.4 is the IP of my server, just replace it with whatever fits your server and hit Save.
[attachment=17440:Skärmavbild 2013-06-12 kl. 19.44.12.png]

8. Open server app, go to the web section. Click the plus icon and enter settings as shown in the picture. trailers.apple.com and port 80. Then I just created a folder named trailers to use as document root. Click done! Now we have the dns ready and a website to serve the apple TV with the information needed to use plexconnect.
[attachment=17441:Skärmavbild 2013-06-12 kl. 19.53.15.png]

9. If you open safari you can still use your all other web sites. If you enter trailers.apple.com you will get a no access message as there are nothing present in the folder you choose to use for keeping the files in.

Our DNS and the website that's supposed to serve the ATV is working! Now it's time to connect our website with the plex connect webserver running on port 9999.

10. To make the connection between trailers.apple.com and the webserver we have to edit the config file for the website we just created in the server app.

Open up terminal and cd to "/etc/apache2/sites" (OS X Server 10.7) or "/Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/sites/" (OS X Server 10.8), then ls in the list you will find a file named "0000_any_80_trailers.apple.com.conf" this is the file we have to edit.

enter the command sudo vi 0000_any_80_trailers.apple.com.conf hit enter and type in your password then enter again.
move the cursor down to the bottom of the file between the </directory> and </VirtualHost> tags. Hit the "i" button on your keyboard and enter the text marked in grey in the picture.

RequestHeader set User-Agent AppleTV
ProxyRequests off
AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode
ProxyPass / http://trailers.apple.com:9999/ nocanon
ProxyPassReverse / http://trailers.apple.com:9999/

Be sure to get all the / right and don't forget the ones at the end of the lines otherwise this won't work.
When you're finished with the text hit "esc" and then "ZZ" (note Z not z).
[attachment=17567:Skärmavbild 2013-06-16 kl. 20.30.55.png]

What we use here is a reverse proxy. When a request arrives to our server - trailers.apple.com at port 80 these lines tells apache that we want another resource to serve this request in your case the plexconnect web server which is running at port 9999. So apache forwards the request for trailers.apple.com gets an answer from plexconnect and nicely returns it back to our AppleTV which has no clue it actually got its XML file from the server at port 9999 instead of port 80 as it requested ;-)

10. Go back to the server app and make sure to reboot your web server. (Turn off and then on again)

11. Now you can try the setup by entering trailers.apple.com in safari and the result should be a blank page which has all the XML in it if you view the source.

If this is the case everything is working as it should, PlexConnect is running on your server at the same time as you can host your own dns and websites without any interruptions.
[attachment=17438:Skärmavbild 2013-06-12 kl. 19.40.53.png]

12 It's time to move over to the ATV. Edit DNS-settings in the ATV and point them to your server (dns-server) In my case I use my OS X server as the standard DNS-server so I left the default dns-setting in my ATV. But just change it to the right IP for your config.

13. Go back to the home screen and enter trailers. Voila PlexConnect running on OS X Server =)

14. If you want to have PlexConnect automatically start at boot then look in the "support/OSX" folder to have launchctl automatically start it without requiring an admin password to be entered each time or to saved anywhere.

That's it!!! :-D

Hi,
